Laser Skin Resurfacing, Alexus Medspa, San Diego

Laser skin resurfacing is a minimally-invasive cosmetic procedure that uses laser technology to improve the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, scars, and other skin imperfections. The treatment uses laser energy to remodel the skin at varying depths, revealing fresh, new skin underneath and stimulating collagen production, which helps to tighten and rejuvenate the skin. Laser skin resurfacing can be performed on various areas of the body, including the face, neck, chest, and hands.

At Alexus Medspa we specialize in laser skin resurfacing treatments. Under the guidance of John T. Alexander II, MD, JD, FACS, we use the latest technology to ensure you optimal results. During the procedure, we will carefully target specific areas of concern, ensuring that the surrounding skin is left untouched. This precision allows for faster healing times and minimal discomfort.

About Laser Skin Resurfacing

Laser resurfacing is one of the most powerful minimally-invasive ways to achieve effective skin rejuvenation, but there are so many types of lasers that it is easy to be confused.

Comparing lasers to cars is a helpful analogy in understanding some simple principles. Cars can be categorized by brand (e.g. Ford, Mercedes, Toyota), type (e.g. truck, SUV, sedan), and fuel source (e.g. gas, diesel, electric). And all cars can be driven very fast or slow (risky vs. safe).

Similarly, lasers can also be categorized by brand, type, and fuel (or laser material). Laser material is usually a gas (e.g. CO2), a rare earth (e.g. erbium), or a crystal (e.g. yttrium aluminum garnet-YAG). It is this laser material that creates the specific wavelength of light for each different laser, determining the target and purpose of the laser. A laser designed to eliminate skin wrinkles uses a different laser material than a laser that targets hair removal. And like cars, lasers can be “driven” fast (very deep) or slowly (very superficial), allowing the provider precise control of depth and risk.

Laser Brand: At Alexus Medspa we use lasers manufactured by Sciton and Lumenis, both leaders in the development and manufacture of state-of-the-art lasers.

Laser Type: Lasers can be divided into two main types, non-ablative and ablative

NON-ABLATIVE means that the laser passes through the skin to a target below, creating no injury or wound to the skin.

ABLATIVE means that the laser is intentionally creating a controlled wound on the surface of the skin to create a smoother surface and stimulate remodeling of the deeper skin structures.

Energy from ablative lasers can be full-field, removing a small layer of skin off the entire skin surface, or partial-field (also known as fractional), which makes tiny punctures in the skin while leaving the skin intact, which speeds healing time. Fractional laser is a lot like micro-needling, only with a laser and not a mechanical device.

Full-field can be thought of as mowing a lawn, as it treats the entire surface. Partial-field, or fractional, can be thought of as aerating a lawn, creating hundreds of small punctures to make the grass more healthy.

Our Lasers

Laser resurfacing treatments can improve the appearance of the following: (2)

  • Dark Spots
  • Lines & Wrinkles
  • Sun Damage
  • Acne Scarring
  • Age Spots
  • Dyspigmentation
  • Large Pores

Non-Ablative Lasers

Both IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) and BBL (Broad-Band Light) are non-ablative devices that deliver controlled, heat-related tissue remodeling in the lower layers of the skin, but do not cause superficial damage to the upper layers. (1)

At Alexus Medspa we have replaced IPL with the Sciton BBL, the most advanced method to tighten and firm skin without any down time by stimulating collagen production.

Why? Although BBL has many similarities to IPL, BBL is more advanced, flexible, and effective.

  • BBL uses a larger range of wavelengths, targeting a greater variety of skin concerns.
  • BBL has greater precision and customization, with interchangeable filters that can be adjusted to target specific chromophores or skin conditions. This flexibility allows practitioners to tailor the treatment more precisely to individual needs.
  • BBL is more powerful and effective than traditional IPL. BBL delivers higher energy levels, allowing for deeper penetration into the skin layers, which can result in more noticeable improvements and better overall outcomes.
  • BBL has additional skin rejuvenation benefits due to its ability to stimulate collagen production more effectively. The controlled heating of the skin during BBL treatment helps to improve skin texture, reduce fine lines and wrinkles, and enhance overall skin tone and firmness.
  • BBL Hero is extremely fast and relatively painless compared to IPL treatments, requiring fewer treatment sessions to achieve the desired results compared to IPL.

BBL uses a broad spectrum of light wavelengths to target specific color targets in the skin, such as melanin (pigment) or hemoglobin (blood vessels).

What to Expect with BBL Treatment

Laser Skin Resurfacing, Alexus Medspa, San Diego

Consultation: Prior to the treatment, you’ll have a consultation with an Alexus Medspa provider who will assess your skin concerns and determine if BBL laser is suitable for you.

Preparation: Your skin will be thoroughly cleansed, and a cooling gel may be applied to enhance your comfort during the procedure. You may also be given protective eyewear to shield your eyes from the intense light.

Treatment: The BBL device emits short pulses of high-intensity light onto the targeted area of your skin. The handpiece is pressed against your skin, and the light energy is delivered in precise pulses. The Hero (High Energy Rapid Output) handpiece allows treatments to be performed very quickly and with minimal discomfort compared to IPL. The color targets in your skin, such as melanin or hemoglobin, absorb the light energy. This absorption causes a heating effect within the specific target, while minimizing damage to the surrounding tissues. The controlled heating of the targeted area stimulates collagen production in the deeper layers of the skin, improving skin texture, reducing fine lines and wrinkles, and promoting overall skin rejuvenation.

Problems Treated: BBL can address various skin concerns, including sun damage, age spots, freckles, acne, rosacea, vascular lesions, and uneven skin tone. The specific settings and filters on the BBL device are adjusted based on the desired outcome and your individual skin condition.

Post-treatment care: After the procedure, a cooling gel or topical ointment may be applied to soothe the treated area. You may experience mild redness or warmth, which typically subsides within a few hours to a few days.

Ablative Lasers

Ablative lasers cause controlled damage to the upper layers of the skin, triggering a healing response. Alexus Medspa offers a variety of ablative laser treatments for safe resurfacing that is customized to your unique skin conditions.

MicroLaserPeel (full-field)

If you want to see noticeable improvements in your skin’s texture and tone, but don’t have time for a lengthy recovery period, the MicroLaserPeel may be an ideal option for you. A MicroLaserPeel is ideal for patients who want to reduce the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, and sun damage, and improve overall skin texture. The procedure typically takes only 15-30 minutes, and patients can resume most normal activities shortly after treatment.

The ProFractional laser can be customized to your needs, making it an effective option for those with various skin concerns, including acne scars, age spots, and fine lines. You can expect some redness and swelling for a few days following the procedure, but in general, downtime is minimal
