About Lip Injections

About Hyaluronic Acid

Hyaluronic acid (HA) is a naturally occurring substance in the body. (2) When injected into the lips, HA attracts and binds to water molecules, providing an instant volume boost. Its hydrating qualities make it ideal for augmenting the soft tissues of the lips and face. There are many different types of HA-based fillers available today, with the main difference between each one being crosslinking, which affects solubility and viscosity. (3)

Our Available Lip Fillers

At Alexus Plastic Surgery, we primarily offer two different fillers for lip injections. These include Restylane® Silk and Juvedérm® Volbella® XC. These fillers have HA as the active ingredient and contain lidocaine to elevate patient comfort throughout your treatment.

Restylane® Silk

Restylane® Silk is a dermal filler in the Restylane® portfolio specifically formulated for the lips. Restylane® Silk has of a lightweight formula to address concerns such as fine lines, thinness, and lip texture. It contains NASHA, a firmer form of HA. This allows the filler to have a more lifting effect without appearing unnatural. (4)

Juvedérm® Volbella® XC

Juvedérm® Volbella® XC is a filler in the Juvedérm® family that can restore the definition and fullness of your lips while also smoothing out visible signs of aging around the mouth. Volbella® uses Vycross® Technology to improve flexibility, allowing it to move more naturally and easily.

Preparation

After scheduling your injections, your specialist will give you a set of instructions to help you prepare. They are fairly straightforward, but following each one closely will promote optimal results. Your specialist may instruct you to:

  • Modify your skincare routine to refrain from using harsh or irritating products around your mouth.
  • Protect your lips using lip balms and other moisturizing products.
  • Avoid taking any medication or supplements that may thin your blood.
  • Arrive at your appointment with clean skin.

Your specialist will provide you with additional instructions during your personal consultation.

Procedure

Your specialist will perform your lip injections in our office. Each treatment takes approximately 15 to 30 minutes, but the exact duration of your appointment will depend on your treatment plan. Lip injections typically do not require anesthesia, but if you are more sensitive to pain, then you may discuss your numbing options with your specialist. Both Restylane® Silk and Juvedérm® Volbella® XC also contain lidocaine to enhance your experience.

Your specialist will cleanse your lips and carefully mark each injection site with a skin-safe marker. They will then carefully inject your chosen formula into the areas to address concerns such as visible signs of aging, volume loss, thinness, and poor definition. After administering the necessary dose of fillers, they will lightly massage your lips to smooth and evenly distribute the formula. You will then be free to return to your routine!

Results

You will be able to see an immediate difference in the shape and volume of your lips, but the full results will become more apparent as your swelling subsides. The results of your injections will vary depending on your aesthetic goals, but you can expect a more shapely, defined, and plump pout. Your renewed lips may also improve the balance across your other facial features, elevating overall proportions.

Restylane® Silk offers results for up to six months, and Juvedérm® Volbella® XC retains its effects for up to one year. Patient experiences may vary.
