Biostimulatory Fillers Alexus Plastic Surgery

A biostimulatory filler is a type of injectable that raises the collagen levels in the skin to improve volume and provide rejuvenation.

Unlike traditional fillers that primarily work by adding immediate volume through water-binding substances like hyaluronic acid, biostimulators stimulate the body’s natural collagen production, often leading to longer-lasting, more gradual results.

At Alexus Plastic Surgery, we specialize in advanced, science-backed treatments designed to enhance your skin’s health and appearance. Every procedure is thoughtfully customized to align with your individual goals, ensuring results that look natural and feel uniquely yours!

About Biostimulatory Fillers

Dermal fillers are a popular treatment for enhancing aesthetics and increasing volume. In 2023, specialists performed more than 25.4 million minimally invasive cosmetic procedures, (1) and approximately 30% of them were injectables. (2) Biostimulatory fillers fit perfectly into this trend, offering long-term improvements by working with your body’s own regenerative processes.

As we age, collagen production gradually decreases, leading to volume loss, fine lines, and skin laxity. Biostimulatory fillers work by stimulating your body’s natural collagen production, helping to restore structure, firmness, and volume over time. These treatments not only improve visible signs of aging but can also positively impact self-confidence and how youthful you feel. By reducing wrinkles, enhancing skin texture, and subtly reshaping facial contours over time, biostimulators offer natural-looking rejuvenation.

Biostimulatory Fillers vs. Wrinkle Relaxers

While biostimulatory fillers add volume to the skin and increase your skin’s collagen levels, wrinkle relaxers reduce the repetitive muscle movements that wear on the skin and result in fine lines and wrinkles. By limiting the production of acetylcholine, wrinkle relaxers help patients achieve a smoother, more youthful-looking appearance. Wrinkle relaxers do not add volume to the skin, but they can be used in conjunction with fillers if a patient has more comprehensive goals.

Bellafill

Bellafill is a biostimulatory filler composed of polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA). Its formula consists of tiny microparticles suspended in a smooth gel and is designed to prevent clumping or granulation. (3) It is highly viscous, which is thought to reduce the risk of migration. (4) When injected, Bellafill acts as a matrix to stimulate the fibroblasts in the skin. As the formula is absorbed by the body over time, it is replaced by collagen, providing long-term enhancements. Bellafill is often used to soften nasolabial folds and acne scars, and can offer results lasting up to five years. (4)

Sculptra

Sculptra contains poly-L-lactic acid (PLLA), a compound known for its ability to stimulate the body’s natural collagen production. Sculptra is especially effective for treating midface volume loss, hollow cheeks, deep wrinkles, and facial folds that contribute to an aged appearance.

PLLA is a biocompatible, well-tolerated material that helps rebuild the skin’s underlying structure, offering subtle, natural-looking, and long-lasting results that often last up to two years or more. In addition to facial rejuvenation, Sculptra can also enhance the appearance of the neck, décolletage, arms, abdomen, and chest, depending on the patient’s concerns.

Benefits of Biostimulatory Fillers

There are many benefits of biostimulatory fillers, which include:

  • Natural-looking results: These fillers add natural-looking volume to the skin to enhance your appearance.
  • Balanced proportions: Replenishing lost volume can enhance and balance your facial features.
  • Long-lasting results: Results from biostimulatory fillers often last much longer than other types of dermal fillers.
  • Minimally invasive treatment: Treatment only requires a series of quick injections.

Candidates

Suitable candidates for biostimulatory fillers are those who would like to address signs of aging and improve their skin’s volume. Most candidates would like to achieve their results without long surgical scars or downtime from anesthesia. Most candidates would like to address:

  • Volume loss
  • Lines around the mouth
  • Under-eye hollows
  • Sunken cheeks
  • Nasolabial folds

All prospective patients should be in good general health and have realistic expectations for their results. During your consultation, we will further assess your candidacy.

Consultation

During your consultation, we will examine your skin and ask about your aesthetic goals to determine the most effective treatment plan for your needs. Please come prepared to discuss your medical history, medications, and previous procedures, if applicable, to help us create the most effective treatment plan. If you have additional aesthetic goals, we can also recommend additional procedures to help you achieve them.

Preparation & Treatment Process

To prepare for biostimulators, you should stop using products that contain retinol, and you should avoid excessive sun exposure to protect your skin from damage. Most patients schedule their treatment two weeks before any important events to prevent skin irritation that could affect their appearance and allow themselves sufficient time for results to manifest.

During the treatment, we will cleanse your skin and administer the formula with a fine needle. We can use a topical numbing cream before administering the formula for your comfort.

After Your Treatment

Although these injectables are not associated with much downtime, we tend to recommend avoiding strenuous activities for a day or two. You should also avoid facials and skin resurfacing treatments immediately after treatment.

Results

Biostimulatory Fillers Alexus Plastic Surgery

Biostimulatory fillers offer gradual, natural-looking improvement as your body begins to produce more collagen in response to the treatment. Over time, you will notice smoother, firmer skin, restored volume, and a more youthful facial structure. Many patients also report feeling more confident and refreshed as their results develop.

Unlike traditional fillers, biostimulators work progressively, with visible improvement typically appearing within a few weeks to months. Results can last up to two years or longer, depending on the product used and individual response. Touch-up treatments can be scheduled to maintain your rejuvenated appearance and support ongoing collagen stimulation.

Additional Facial Rejuvenation Treatments

Depending on your aesthetic goals, there are several additional treatments we can perform to enhance your rejuvenation results.

Facials

Facials are effective for addressing sun damage, fine lines, wrinkles, and discoloration. We can customize your facial to exfoliate your skin and nourish it with essential nutrients. If you have specific skin concerns such as acne or dryness, we can perform a series of treatments to refresh your skin and renew your appearance.

Peels

Peels can exfoliate your skin and diminish impurities. They can also raise your skin’s collagen levels to address signs of aging and refresh your appearance.

SkinPen

SkinPen is a microneedling treatment that penetrates the skin with tiny needles to raise your skin’s collagen levels. This is a medical-grade, FDA-approved treatment that can address numerous different concerns, including scars, dark spots, pores, and fine lines. Patients report improved confidence after undergoing this innovative skincare technology.

FAQ

What is the difference between biostimulatory fillers and other types of fillers?

Biostimulatory fillers raise your skin’s collagen levels to refresh your skin over time, while other types of fillers add volume to the skin without the same regenerative benefits. During your consultation, we can discuss the most effective treatment options for your aesthetic goals.

Will there be any downtime after biostimulatory fillers?

You can return to most of your usual activities afterward as long as you avoid excessive sun exposure.

Is Botox a biostimulatory filler?

No, Botox is not a biostimulatory filler. Botox is a neuromodulator injectable. It works by limiting acetylcholine production, which keeps facial muscles in a semi-permanent relaxed state, which then helps to diminish wrinkles and prevent them from forming. Patients may receive both of these injectables to address different concerns.

Can I receive other treatments alongside biostimulatory fillers?

Yes! Many patients choose to combine biostimulatory filler injections with treatments like facials, peels, or other injectables. If you are interested in a combined treatment plan, let your specialist know during your personal consultation.
