About the Jessner Peel

Jessner’s peel is a popular combined peeling formula that is designed to help patients clear their skin. This chemical peel is named after the American dermatologist Dr. Max Jessner, the inventor and developer of the solution. (1) This peel combines three ingredients to help each patient address their acne concerns, including salicylic acid, lactic acid, and resorcinol.

Salicylic Acid

Willow bark, the natural source of salicylic acid, has been used in skin treatments for over 2,000 years, though purified salicylic acid became common in modern dermatology in the 19th century. (2) This ingredient is primarily used to exfoliate the skin, clear clogged or blocked pores, and accelerate skin cell turnover.

Lactic Acid

Lactic acid is an ingredient that can naturally be found in the skin, red blood cells, muscles, and even the gastrointestinal tract. Lactic acid is used as a chemical exfoliant to improve the texture and tone of the skin, reduce the appearance of wrinkles or creases, and improve the absorption of other skincare products. Additionally, it may be used to address post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation. (1)

Resorcinol

Resorcinol is used in many chemical peels and skincare products to help assist with skin cell turnover and the breakdown of rough, scaly, or textured skin. This ingredient is a keratolytic agent, meaning it helps break down keratin, a protein found in the outermost layer of skin, hair, and nails.

Benefits of Jessner’s Peel

Many benefits may be experienced after receiving a Jessner peel, including:

  • Improved Skin Texture: Exfoliation through the Jessner peel promotes smoother skin, diminishing rough or dry patches and revealing a smoother surface.
  • Reduced Hyperpigmentation: By targeting dark spots and uneven skin tone, patients can experience a more uniform skin appearance.
  • Minimized Acne Scars: Active ingredients in the formula can significantly diminish the appearance of post-acne scarring.
  • Addressing Fine Lines and Wrinkles: Regular treatments can help reduce the prominence of fine lines, granting a more youthful visage.
  • Stimulated Collagen Production: This peel may promote mild collagen remodeling over time with consistent use.
  • Alleviates Oily Skin: With salicylic acid as an ingredient, this treatment can help regulate excess oil production, making it a beneficial option for those with oily complexions.
  • Minimal Downtime: Compared to deeper peels, the Jessner peel requires little recovery time, enabling patients to resume normal activities sooner.

Suitable Candidates

Suitable candidates for a Jessner’s peel include those interested in improving the texture, tone, and clarity of their skin. This treatment is recommended for patients with acne-prone or oily skin, hyperpigmentation, sun-damaged skin, and rough texturing. Please note that patients actively using retinoids or taking certain acne medications may need to discontinue the use of their treatment temporarily before receiving a Jessner’s peel. Our specialist will determine each patient’s candidacy during their personal consultation.

Personal Consultation

Before receiving your Jessner’s peel, each patient will have a personal consultation. Our specialist will explain the details and process of the peel before conversing with each patient about their medical history, concerns, and ideal results. The specialist will ensure they take time to answer each question and address any concerns before moving on. Once each detail has been reviewed, the specialist will create an effective treatment plan for each patient based on their skin type and concerns. Any preparation and recovery instructions will be provided to each patient, as well as a written price quote. Each patient is asked to be prepared to converse openly about their skin, as this consultation is time dedicated to them and their specific treatment.

Preparation

Patients will receive instructions on how to prepare their skin before their peel. While preparation is straightforward, it is important to follow each instruction to ensure the best results.

Individuals who use acne medications (like isotretinoin) or harsher skincare products will need to discontinue or alter their routine several days in advance. Unnecessary sun exposure, as well as exfoliation and hair removal in the treatment area, should be avoided at least one week in advance. Patients with a history of cold sores may also need to take medications before their appointment to avoid a potential flare-up. (3) On the day of the procedure itself, patients should arrive with clean skin, free from any makeup or skin products.

Procedure

On the day of their appointment, each patient will be led to a private seating area where the specialist will cleanse their skin to remove any oils or products. The Jessner peel will then be applied in layers with either a brush or a pad. The strength of the peel will depend on how many layers are applied. Patients may receive 1-3 layers for a light peel, 4-6 layers for a medium peel, and 7-8 layers for a deeper peel. Jessner’s peel does not reach the deep dermis and is not considered a deep peel. Once the treatment has been applied, a soothing ointment or cream will be applied to each patient’s face. The peel is self-neutralizing, meaning that each patient will leave the appointment with the peel still actively working. After a certain amount of time, the effects of the peel will end.

Recovery

Following each patient’s peel, they will experience tightness, redness, and a shiny appearance in their skin. Face washing should be avoided for several hours after the appointment to allow the formula to self-neutralize. Peeling will start to occur in the following days, but it is important to avoid picking, peeling, and scratching to ensure that no skin damage occurs. (3) Patients may need to alter their skincare routine to include a mild or gentle cleanser. Furthermore, individuals will need to avoid unnecessary sun exposure, and they should use sunscreen regularly. The specialist will discuss any additional instructions during the consultation.

Corresponding Procedures

We offer many treatments at Alexus Medspa that may be performed to complement the effects of each patient’s Jessner’s peel, the most popular being our Oxygen Infusion Facial and our SkinPen Microneedling.

  • Oxygen Infusion Facial: Our Oxygen Infusion Facial is a soothing skin treatment designed to support healing, hydration, erythema, and edema. Our facial infuses over 87 different minerals, as well as vitamins A, C, and E, to leave patients with a glowing complexion. This treatment is highly recommended for patients who have recently received a chemical peel or laser resurfacing treatment.
  • SkinPen Microneedling: SkinPen uses microneedling technology to create micropunctures within the skin to stimulate the body’s natural healing properties. By doing so, the skin produces new collagen and elastin, which can help reduce the visibility of wrinkles, creases, and acne scarring.
